Getting the best out of the Canon 8800F
From here and on I will try to learn how to get maximum performance from this scanner!
First of all I will stick to the use of Vuescan and I will explore the RAW scan facility!
If you use the Vuescan Output settings as seen in the image below it will get you a
Adobe DNG raw format file, that file can be used in Adobe RAW converter.
Setting to be made in Vuescan Output tab to get

In Adobe Camera RAW you can do all kind of
image tweaks, this tab is about sharpening

Hmmm! this is interesting isn't it?
I find the Camera raw image to be equally sharp but much less grainy,
it also makes the image to look almost sterile or if you like artificial.
Anyhow if I decrease the noise reduction a bit and leave some
of the grain untouched and lower the "masking to 60" the image start to look more analog again :0)
