Analog capture digitally converted vs digitally captured, both projected digitally
by the Panasonic PT-AE3000u

The scene for the Digital vs analog film on a projector comparing test This is hour corner shop
for good Italian deli and
the scene I shot for this
Analog film (Velvia 100)
VS Digital capture
(Nikon D200) comparing
test.

Both files will be
projected by the
Pannasonic PT-AE 3000
And the screen
photographed with the
same Nikon D200

For the Nikon F100 I used to shoot the Velvia test shoot I used Nikon 17-35 F2:8 AFS
And the with the D200 I used Sigma 10-20mm to keep about the same framing.

Before you make your judgments, take in to count that there is a great deal of agnification
involved in those comparing crops.
The large image to the right is a 100% crop from the original D200 image that is used in this comparing test!

The small one is a 100% crop from the
projector optimized file (a 1080 pixel high image)

The file is than projected by the Panasonic
PT-AE 3000 and a photo is taken with the
D200 to make the crops you can see above!

With all this in mind you might be able to make your own judgments :0)
But I will still spend some words on this subject and give you my conclusions.

My conclusion is that I can scan and project my slides at or above the quality of
a direct projected slide.
The scanned slide might be a bit behind the fully digital path but it is a close call.
And experienced image quality is not only a matter of sharpness or resolution it is
in fact more a matter of color.

Digital projection feels like 2000+ and analog more like 1960th.
Not for the reason that analog projection stands behind quality wise, but because
digital give us much more alternatives in regards of cropping options and the fact
that it is more handy in operation and possibility of making a great slide show.

And the digital images don't pop due to lamp heating like glassless slides!

Still a digital projector of high quality (The Pannasonic PT-AE3000 is to be considered as a mid range projector as this is written June 5 2009)
is quite expensive but that is only if you look at it as a single slide projector only.
In fact for professional slideshows one digital projector can replace several analog
slide projectors (2 or more analog projectors is neaded to perform a pro style slideshow)
plus the fact that it can doubble as a cinema projector which is originally was
intended to be :0)
