Just a small comment here!
I love to work with vuescan and it usually
help me get the best out of my scanners,
but in this case it looks like scangear is the
way to go at least for now and until some
updates/improvements have been done to
vuescan driver for the canon 8600F.

Vuescan usually outperform the canon software
and it does in the case of FS4000 and 9950F.
But I remember that there was problems with
the first release of Vuescan and it's support to
the canon 9950F to but a few updates of
Vuescan have solved that.

Silverfast is considered to be the high end
scanner software, but to me scangear perform
equal or better.

When applying USM the scan done with scangear
can be cranked up more without being noisy
I liked scangear best because it is also easier
to get a nice scan with the use of scangear!

I know, this is a bit off topic but I could not resist :0)
Nikon D200 Sigma 70mm F2:8 DG Macro a paper tube and a disk of white
semi transparent plastic sheet material. (Instructions in a later project :0)
  Camera with D.I.Y duplicator attached.

I was lucky to find a tube that fit snuggly
inside the lens hood of the Sigma!
